Some of the UK’s greatest thinkers and intellectuals have passed through Manchester, and today the neighborhood continues through a vibrant academic scene. The University of Manchester, formed during the Industrial Revolution, has given rise to 25 Nobel laureates over the centuries. Today many elements of the campus, just down the road from Kimpton Clocktower Hotel, are open to the public, including the newly remodeled Whitworth art gallery, which has housed everything from ancient Andean textiles and paintings by Edvard Munch to conceptual contemporary works by UK artists. Also nearby is the Manchester Metropolitan University, Salford University and the Manchester History Museum, home to 16,000 objects from 10,000 BC to 600 AD, and a concert hall.
